A little too much government intrusion if you ask me, however, I do agree we, as a society, drink WAAAAY too much soda.  (I count myself as part of the soda drinkers)

Philly has been talking about this long before I read this( 2 cents per ounce). It's to help with the budgeting shortfalls.

My question, if you are doing this to increase revenue, but in the end it ends up reducing the amount of soda consumed leading to mass layoffs at the local bottling plants and a distributors, did it really help or hinder recovery?

Sugar may make you fat, but Aspartame causes cancer, and the sweetener in Sweet & Low causes Alsheimer's

Choose your poison I guess...

It would lower health care cost for the average person. The amount of soda will probably decrease by less than the amount raised. Demand destruction is unknown, but it is probably just above 2 cents per ounce, I'm sure that was investigated to maximize tax revenues.

Think of it like gasoline, at about $4 a gallon, most people change car purchasing and driving choices. Below that number it is all profit.

I think there should be a soda tax.  Too many people these days think soda is a good drink choice, it is not.  And it is not good for you.

Also, if they are going to tax soda, they should try and start removing high fructose corn syrup from practically everything we eat.  That's what's making us a country of fat asses.

Here is a linky for aspartame:

Ahhh fook it. Lets just BAN everything thats not healthy. From Booze to cake mix.  Everyone will be healthy (for the most part), cranky and jobless. I mean why blame a person on their decision of what they consume... Because youre fat Im going to pay more? Sounds awesome.  Im going out to the yard to eat some grass now.

It says the article has expired.  I think it must be a sin tax kind of deal.  If they don't tax it too much, it could be a decend little boost of money for the gubmint.  If they are taxing soda as a means of regulating what people drink...are you chitting me?  Just can't be the case, but then again, I didn't get to read the article.  I can see removing soda machines from schools, but it is a different thing trying to tax soda out of being a popular drink.  I am sure the soda companies wouldn't allow that to happen anyway.  It has got to be big business (too lazy to look it up).

I used to know someone that drank a 2 liter bottle with every meal.  Each meal was usually a footlong hoagie (sub or hero for the rest of the world)

I have heard that if you drink soda with your meal, it takes all the nutritional value out of your food.  I usually have a glass of milk with my dinner...or whine...or beer.
